This unique 380 square-foot project is located near Lake Harriet and the historic streetcar line. A recent change to the Minneapolis zoning code paved the way for building an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in this location. In addition to other benefits, ADU’s allow for independent multi-generational housing within close proximity to a primary residence.
The ADU addresses the client’s goals of developing a separate accommodation for visiting family, friends, and intermittent Airbnb renters. The Architect designed a separate but complimentary structure that was both welcoming and distinctly separate from the main house. The use of large sliding glass doors allows the space to connect to the house for gatherings on the adjoining deck while interior window treatments allow the ADU resident privacy at other times.
The exterior aesthetic blends with the residential neighborhood context while still remaining eye-catching to a potential Airbnb guest. The Architect worked to refine key exterior elements such as the siding pattern and overall color palette. The final combination of bold red paint, vertical siding, and large awning windows creates a fresh, “nested” exterior. To maximize the potential of the small footprint, the design strategically places glass in the perimeter walls; organizes the internal spaces with half-height and full-height partitions, and vaults portions of the ceiling planes. Additionally, the compact and concealed kitchen appliances exemplify how an essentials-only project can still be modern, comfortable, and stylish.
