A 14,670 sq. ft. Designed & Built by Space Matrix for a confidential client, organised around a hospitality-inspired Front-of-House model, a dual-register material strategy, and an operational framework balancing confidentiality with collaboration.
The brief required the design to resolve a specific tension inherent to elite professional-services environments: a workplace that reinforces brand identity and elevates client experience while meeting the discretion, security, and functional demands of a global legal practice. The engagement began with extensive spatial assessments and test-fits across shortlisted locations, establishing layout efficiency, user flow, and scalability as prerequisites before design direction was set.
The design strategy was developed through visioning workshops with Gibson Dunn's leadership, translating brand values, cultural nuance, and long-term business objectives into spatial and experiential principles anchored around a single governing concept: timeless professionalism rendered as space.
The Front-of-House is the primary planning gesture. Two large boardrooms are integrated with the reception and lounge to form a single multifunctional zone, calibrated to support high-profile meetings, briefings, and firm-hosted events within one flexible spatial footprint. Materiality is deployed as a precision instrument rather than a decorative layer: natural stone, rich timber, and bespoke lighting were specified to communicate refinement, discretion, and permanence -qualities central to Gibson Dunn's institutional identity.
Operational infrastructure is embedded throughout to meet the functional demands of legal practice at this level. Smart access systems, acoustically zoned spaces, AV-integrated meeting rooms, and layered lighting strategies are planned in combination to support confidentiality and collaboration concurrently, without one compromising the other. Furniture selection and finish detailing were determined against this dual requirement, enhancing user experience without sacrificing operational performance.
The completed office functions as a strategic asset rather than a conventional workplace -a spatial composition that upholds Gibson Dunn's legacy while remaining adaptable for future business needs. Thoughtfully zoned areas support both focused, confidential work and agile multifunctional use, while integrated technology enables hybrid collaboration and long-term operational efficiency. The design's success is measured not by visual impression alone but by its capacity to reinforce brand, culture, people, and strategy simultaneously -a workplace engineered as a confident, enduring expression of institutional identity.
