"3gian" is a name inspired by traditional Vietnamese rural houses, which represent the 3 main spaces in a traditional house.
One of major challenges facing the current construction environment is rural development in the future. Modernization and technological advances promise to bring us a better life with more convenient and modern living conditions, to some extent, they also cut the link between rural living and traditional values.
The rate of urbanization in Vietnam is at a very high level and will increase even faster in the future. This makes the land fund in rural areas more and more narrowed. In addition, the increase in population and the development of society are associated with each person's needs for a modern life, which leads to the inevitable increase in the land fund for construction of houses and public works. in Vietnamese villages.
Therefore, the countryside has become more cramped, the natural environment landscape has been gradually replaced by houses, modern infrastructures, public buildings. In the past 20 years, urban tube houses with the height of 3-5 floors have been imported into the rural villages, making the rural architecture become chaotic, losing its traditional identity.
There is no rural village’s structurethat can endure throughcenturies without changing. However, in which way, the rural areas could be advocated and developed while still preserving the traditional spirit and essence or howto identify the identity of rural architecture in vietnam is our goal in design.
“Because of massive urbanization and modernization, the rural villages are facing many negative impacts. We strive to find the link between traditional and modern elements, while simultaneously grasping the capture the superiority of modern technology to find a connection with the local.”
The house is designed for a young couple and their twochildren. Due to the process of urbanization, the plot size is different from the traditional rural structure in the region.
We learned from the spatialstructure of 3 spaces in a traditional house, however, we combine and rearrange "3spaces into 1", on a long and narrow area. There are 2 courtyards that ensure the internal and external connectivity and separate private spaces for family members.
The front garden and awning create a common living space and socialize area for owners and their neighbors. This is a typical feature of outdoor living culture in rural areas of North Central Vietnam. Traditional tiled roofs are incorporated into the simple stylized truss system. Due to the limited construction cost and the use of local construction teams, we strive to provide a minimal, easy-to-construct spatial structure. We have worked a lot with local builders to come up with minimal processing techniques that still work best for a modern space that combines traditional local elements.
The house is a prototype that we designedfor a village in the countryside. The context of limited land fundsresults in increasingly disrupting the village structure, with the introduction of mixed architecture, losing the traditional identity. “3gian” bears the breath of contemporary countryside that we develop on the basis of local culture and traditions in the current context.
