Set in Aspen's historic West End, Continuum is a Queen Anne Victorian reimagined by Rowland+Broughton.The West End is defined by its collection of late nineteenth century homes, many originally built for prominent mining families. At Continuum, the original structure had remained largely untouched for decades, even as a modern addition was introduced in the late 1990s. The clients, creative figures and avid art collectors, brought R+B in to rebalance that architectural dialogue, preserving the home's character while reworking its interior to support connection and everyday use.
Arrival begins at the historic front entry, where original proportions and detailing establish the home's character immediately. Inside, R+B rethought how the rooms connect, opening a series of enclosed spaces into a sequence with multiple points of access and clearer sightlines. A former bedroom on the main level became a relaxed bar and gathering space, reintroducing an underused area of the house and creating a natural transition between the dining room, living spaces, and entry. Near the entry, the original staircase remains in place, its guardrail reimagined as a sculptural metal ribbon finished in a muted, contemporary tone that respects the stair's original scale and curvature.
Moving through the main level, existing red oak floors were blended with new bleached oak, unifying the historic and renovated portions of the home. Soft white walls let architectural details, built-in millwork, and the clients' contemporary art collection take focus, while a redesigned fireplace anchors the front living room as a subtle gathering point.
At the center of the home, the kitchen sits in the knuckle between the Victorian structure and the modern addition. Once finished in maple, the space was fully reworked to connect both halves of the house: custom stainless steel cabinetry creates a clean, neutral presence, while black soapstone countertops ground the room. Marble sourced from the Elk mountains of Colorado brings regional specificity to the bathrooms and pantry. Beyond the kitchen, circulation opens toward the addition, where charcoal laminate millwork and dark soapstone introduce quiet contrast against the existing stone floors and walls, forming a layered, understated backdrop for daily life.
Upstairs, the historic wing was reconfigured into three ensuite bedrooms for the clients' daughters, each designed to feel functional and flexible while retaining the proportions of the original house. Seagrass carpeting and painted trim bring a quiet consistency to the level. Below, the basement, essential square footage within Aspen's tight zoning constraints, houses a guest suite, gym, and sauna. Careful attention to light, ceiling height, and material transitions ensures these spaces feel welcoming rather than subterranean.
Furnished and curated entirely by the clients, Continuum remains unmistakably Victorian, now shaped to support modern patterns of living. Through careful planning and material restraint, R+B has renewed the home while keeping it rooted in its past.
