Pediatric therapy patients need to be in calming environments. The overall design concept has important therapeutic parameters and should combine soft neutrals and bright colors.
Inspire
Colorful function. In the fall of 2014, Creighton University began building its new pediatric clinic for physical and occupational therapy. The facility includes several gymnasiums where children of all ages play and work on their physical rehabilitation, examination rooms, professional offices, a reception area, and a feeding room where children also engage in speech therapy.
Create
Flexible design. LeeAnn Crist, a buyer and interior designer at the Omaha-based university, knew it was important to incorporate just the right amount of vivid colors to create both visual pop and wayfinding functionality in the flooring. Comfort was also an important factor, as the children’s therapy often includes physical activities.
Crist’s design incorporated Patcraft’s Mixed Materials in grays and blacks for the majority of the flooring, then she inserted Color Choice modular carpet in orange, green, purple and blue for both form and function. The Color Choice products are bright and cheerful, and allowed her to play around with the creativity of the products.
Transform
Transform healing. Visitors to the clinic love the array of colors, patterns, textures and shapes. Two months after the clinic opened, parents of students there raved about the facility and everything in there. The feedback has been very positive.
“I was looking for something that was very child-friendly, but in a design that isn’t too bothersome for them to look at. This product was perfect, with the different choices of carpet and lvt that all went together so well.” Leeann Crist / buyer and interior designer, Creighton University
