De Oude Egge is historically a miners’ neighborhood in the municipality of Brunssum. A large-scale urban renewal project was carried out here by BAM Wonen on behalf of housing corporation Weller. Together with the municipality and local residents, an authentic design for the public space and buildings was developed. To reflect this character in the brickwork as well, a combination of Nassau Bont and Mangaan bricks was chosen.
Architect
The original neighborhood was designed around 100 years ago by architect Jan Stuyt, with the aim of providing housing for miners of the Staatsmijn Hendrik. At the time, he mainly focused on designing basilicas, monasteries, and other neo-Romanesque and neoclassical buildings. He was particularly drawn to rounded arches, especially when combined with clear, symmetrical designs that conveyed a sense of harmony and calm—features that characterized his personal style.
Concept Behind the Design & the Role of Brick
For the “De Oude Egge” neighborhood renewal project, preserving the old style and historical appearance was one of the most important design objectives. Matching bricks were selected that most closely resembled those used in the original construction style. A brown, multi-toned handmade brick in Waal format with a sanded texture was chosen. Our Nassau Bont and Mangaan bricks from the Classics collection contribute to the authentic character of the new-build design and blend seamlessly into the streetscape of the former mining colonies in Brunssum. The choice of this masonry clearly reflects the commitment to preserving the architectural integrity of the neighborhood, while at the same time meeting modern housing and sustainability standards.
The project was carried out in phases between 2020 and 2022, after which the neighborhood renewal project was completed in excellent condition. Residents and the wider community are very pleased with the final result. In addition to the fact that the new construction reflects part of their familiar neighborhood—something they are very satisfied with—the design process was highly transparent and involved active participation from residents. Both residents and other stakeholders speak with pride about the outcome and the future of the neighborhood.
This renewal of “De Oude Egge” demonstrates that a specific type of brick can add a great deal of character to a new-build project and can make a design immediately feel familiar and established—something everyone appreciates.
Vision for the Renewal
Over time, the existing homes gradually became outdated. SATIJNplus Architecten therefore designed a new project intended to reflect the old character. The renewal project, carried out by BAM Wonen on behalf of housing corporation Weller, made it possible to demolish 130 homes and rebuild them in the original style.
