De Parabool supports children, (young) adults, and elderly people with intellectual disabilities.
With small-scale residential, work, and daytime activity locations in the Southwest Overijssel region, the organization focuses on personal development, social interaction, and full participation in society.
Previously, De Parabool's service office was located on Colmschaterstraatweg in Schalkhaar. In addition, the organization offered daytime activities at various locations, including Colmschaterstraatweg and Beatrixlaan in Deventer. However, the existing buildings no longer met modern standards. They were outdated, difficult to maintain, and challenging to make sustainable. They also no longer aligned with De Parabool's desired way of working.
Therefore, the decision was made to sell several properties and construct a new, modern building on Brederodelaan in Deventer. This new building, De Uiterwaarden, houses four daytime activity groups and the service office — all under one roof. This consolidation of functions contributes to improved collaboration, more efficient use of space, and stronger connections between staff and clients.
The new building was designed with sustainability, flexibility, and future resilience in mind. The wooden facade with vertical slats gives the building a warm, natural appearance that harmonizes with the green surroundings of the nearby park at Jan Luykenkolk. Nature-inclusive design was also consciously embraced to support biodiversity. For example, bird and bat nesting boxes have been incorporated into the architecture, as well as shelters for hedgehogs.
Studio Groen+Schild designed both the exterior and interior. This integrated approach ensures that shapes, materials, and colors complement one another beautifully. The result is a cohesive, warm, and functional building for clients, staff, and visitors.
