In December 2009, Hong Kong hosted the East Asian Games. A total of 2,377 athletes from 9 East Asian nations competed in 262 events in 22 sports. It was the biggest sporting event ever held in the territory.

In November 2006, HEAD Architecture won an open competition to thematically design the 13 venues throughout Hong Kong. HEAD Architecture created a unified and coherent visual thematic design for all venues. Central to this was the memorable and meaningful.

HEAD’s solution provided cost-effective and environmental solutions to the brief. In their press release, the Jury commented that they “chose the scheme for its striking and imaginative entrance sculpture that (brought) out the spirit of the East Asian Games. The jury appreciated that the winning design was inspired by the East Asian Games emblem. Another merit of the design is its relative ease of implementation, which was an important criterion for the assessment.”
