Connecting Campus and Community

KieranTimberlake as Architects

The Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub is a thriving nexus for student and community entrepreneurship and collaboration. As Penn State’s first ground-up building in downtown State College, it promotes a culture of inquiry and exploration beyond the confines of campus. In alignment with the University’s enduring ethos of teaching, research, and service, the Innovation Hub is a critical component of Penn State’s entrepreneurial ecosystem, providing resources and opportunities for students across disciplines, as well as local businesses and start-ups throughout the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The 85,000-square-foot LEED Gold-targeting building features state-of-the-art entrepreneurial and innovation resources, such as rapid prototyping and fabrication labs, public co-working areas, an interactive classroom, top floor meeting spaces with panoramic views, and collaboration commons. These spaces were designed to accelerate innovation, technology commercialization, and support local start-up companies through knowledge sharing and mentorship.

In a community strongly identified with the large, public university it hosts, the accessibility of educational resources can be daunting. Indeed, Penn State had zero purpose-built facilities within the municipal limits of State College, and the operational units housed in their acquired and rented facilities were by their administrative nature closed to the community. The Eric J. Barron Innovation Hub radically alters this opaque relationship, creating a facility that truly brings the community and the University together in a common purpose of inclusive learning, mentorship, and collaboration.
