A Contemporary Citadel for Modern Luxury
Designed by RSP and inspired by the enduring legacy of Qasr Al Hosn, this exclusive private island resort reinterprets the architectural and cultural significance of the citadel as a contemporary sanctuary. Conceived as a fortified world within the city, the project establishes a clear distinction between the surrounding urban environment and a protected realm of privacy, tranquillity, and immersive luxury.
Rather than functioning as a conventional resort, the masterplan is designed as a carefully choreographed journey. Every threshold, courtyard, and architectural sequence reinforces a sense of exclusivity, transforming arrival into an experience of gradual discovery.
Architecture Defined by Permanence
The architectural language is expressed through monolithic limestone volumes rising from a continuous plinth, creating an image of strength, permanence, and protection. Deeply recessed openings, shaded colonnades, and layered terraces introduce depth and porosity while carefully controlling light, shade, and views.
Materiality is intentionally restrained, allowing stone, water, and landscape to become the defining architectural elements. Richness is achieved not through ornament, but through proportion, craftsmanship, and the interplay of mass and void.
A Choreographed Journey
The experience begins at the fortified perimeter, where controlled gateways establish a clear transition from the city into the resort. A carefully compressed arrival sequence gradually reveals the architecture, building anticipation before opening into a series of monumental civic spaces.
At the heart of the resort, a cloistered courtyard provides a moment of pause before guests enter the Great Hall, where a vaulted stone volume frames panoramic views towards the Abu Dhabi skyline. Beneath this monumental space, a dramatic sunken water court introduces visitors to an unexpected subterranean world.
Discovering the World Below
Hidden beneath the Great Hall, the subterranean realm offers a contrasting spatial experience inspired by natural caverns and labyrinthine landscapes. Sculpted stone walls, cascading waterfalls, lush planting, and a tranquil water lake create an immersive environment centred on exploration and sensory discovery.
This concealed world accommodates a curated collection of wellness, entertainment, and leisure experiences, seamlessly integrated into the architecture to create an atmosphere of exclusivity and retreat.
Resort Living Reimagined
The architectural narrative extends across every aspect of the resort experience. Private members' clubs, wellness facilities, theatres, entertainment venues, waterfront retail, fine dining, marina experiences, and a secluded beach are carefully woven into the masterplan rather than treated as isolated amenities.
The result is a destination where architecture shapes every stage of the guest journey, balancing monumentality with intimacy to create a timeless expression of contemporary luxury.
