An adaptable timber structure rooted in climate-conscious design

Located on the historic Foirail square in Laguiole, southern France, the new Cultural Center by Bétillon & Freyermuth Architectes in collaboration with crypto architectes seeks to redefine the idea of a civic building in a rural context. The project was commissioned by the intercommunal authority Aubrac Carladez Viadène, and it brings together multiple public functions under one flexible roof: a music school, a media library, a nursery, and administrative offices. It was conceived not as a fixed-form object, but as a system—a reconfigurable "machine building" capable of evolving over time.

Modular timber frame for long-term adaptability
A 5×5 meter modular post-and-beam grid is made entirely of timber. This structural system enables infinite internal reconfigurations to accommodate future shifts in program and use. The grid is infilled with a variety of components—including glazed panels, folding bays, and motorized windows—allowing the building to shift between openness and enclosure. Users of the building were invited to negotiate and predefine their spatial allocations within the grid, creating a shared architecture shaped by dialogue and use, rather than formal prescription.

Climate responsiveness through passive and active strategies
Designed with the mountain climate in mind, the building incorporates numerous bioclimatic strategies to self-regulate temperature and ventilation. Two large motorized roof openings enable night-time cooling, allowing cooler air to flush the interior and reset thermal conditions by morning. Automated louver systems control solar exposure and air exchange throughout the day. These features reduce reliance on mechanical systems and maintain year-round comfort using the local environment as a natural resource.

Exposed systems and honest materiality
All technical networks—pipes, ducts, and wiring—are left visible, simplifying future modifications and reinforcing the project’s ethos of transparency and utility. The timber structure remains exposed both inside and out, celebrating the natural grain and thermal qualities of the material. Combined with the straightforward infill components, the architecture achieves an aesthetic of functional clarity and reduced environmental impact. Although specific product brands are not publicly listed, the building’s structure and skin are composed almost entirely of biosourced materials.

Embedded in landscape and rural identity
Despite its contemporary expression, the center is carefully integrated into the rural setting of Laguiole. Courtyards and open-air patios punctuate the building, enhancing visual permeability and access to daylight. Outdoor areas support social gathering and extend the building’s public function into the landscape. The restrained palette of natural materials and minimalist detailing ensures the building resonates with its surroundings while offering a new civic identity.
