The Leenders pumping station has been realized on the Zomerdijk in Wanneperveen. The pumping station drains the excess water, making the surrounding buildings less vulnerable to flooding. This is more necessary than ever, especially now that the climate is changing. The new pumping station has a maximum capacity of 165,000 liters of water per minute.
It is often chosen to integrate a pumping station invisibly into the landscape. The philosophy chosen for the Leenders pumping station is to create a contemporary monument in the landscape. The industrial function of the pumping station has been made visible in the design. This is reflected, among other things, in the semi-transparent facades in which round openings have been made in the inner shell. After sunset, colored light shines out from the pumping station. Different colors make it clear whether the pumping station is in operation at that moment or not.
For example, the pumping station turns red when it is in full operation and green when there is minimal activity. The colors vary in intensity depending on the power of the pumping station.
The industrial character of the pumping station is also reflected in the masonry ribs, the chimneys and the zinc roofing. The local fauna has also been taken into account. For example, the fish can swim past the pumping station via a separate pipe and nesting boxes for birds have been integrated into the design in the double facade.
In addition, as many materials as possible have been used with a low CO2 footprint.
