McKinley Studios was commissioned to design the Groundswell House—a nature-driven surf retreat conceived to foster a deep connection with the surrounding landscape.
The design process began with an exploration of architectural strategies that responded directly to the site’s varied physical conditions, the client’s programmatic vision, and the desire to maximize both forest immersion and ocean views. The massing of the house emerged through a series of deliberate gestures: carving into the landscape, staggering volumes to follow topography, opening to frame views, and extending to create moments of shelter and exposure.
In parallel with massing studies, we developed a series of impressionistic representations—elevational studies and atmospheric vignettes—that captured the experiential essence of the retreat. These explorations considered materiality, light, and the genius loci—the spirit of place—guiding the design toward a response that felt grounded and intuitive.
This research informed a palette of natural, tactile materials, including raw concrete, wood, and stone, chosen for their ability to harmonize with the coastal setting and their resilience in high-salt environments. Both exterior and interior materials were selected not only for their durability, but for their ability to age gracefully, reinforcing the retreat’s connection to the elements and its sense of permanence within the landscape.
