The Halles district is first and foremost a project for the city. Unfinished to date, a second and final stage will extend it on La Place de la Gare. Its ambition is to create an urban fragment as an extension of the historic centre of Morges. In terms of urban morphology, the project seeks to strengthen the urban area of Morges in its southern part. The scale of the existing blocks is preserved, from the Central Street to Saint-Louis Street. The scale of the existing buildings on Sablon Street is extended and gradually increased towards the rail line.
The new station will act as an urban landmark to the south of the SBB tracks, defining a triangle formed by the Castle and the Temple. The Centrale Street will provide a direct link between the old town centre and La Place de la Gare, and the project will reinforce this link. The new station square opens out on its eastern side towards the Mail du Sablon, creating a continuous and flexible public space, like a "linear square". Its large size reflects the current needs of the town of Morges, with its connection to the rail network, the new car parks and the motorway.
In terms of the programme, the proposed district will be able to accommodate all the elements required for a balanced urban environment. In addition to the new station, the programme includes housing, shops, offices, workshops, pedestrian areas, accommodation for all generations from the youngest to the oldest, exceptional accessibility to public transport and intelligent accessibility to private vehicles.
