Every design move from entry to personal interaction, crossing over the threshold from a social space into the transformative studio, to an innovative rowing experience engaging users in a dynamic video wall, to replenishing with natural supplements from t. Loft contributes to a holistic experience. KEM STUDIO, the architect and interior designer, collaborated with Dimensional Innovations who designed a seamless, game-changing rowing experience.
What were the key challenges?
With Health House, we needed to redefine the fitness studio typology. Our goal was to create a seamless integration between digital technology and the built environment. Since, we were designing within an existing shell, our options were limited by those constraints. Overall, or main guiding principle was to express the Health House brand through the materials – we wanted it to feel stripped down yet refined.
How is the project unique?
At first glance, Health House does not resemble a typical fitness studio and purposefully so. Its large 58-foot wide digital wall and all-black rowing studio is closer in appearance to a movie theater. In collaborating with Dimensional Innovations, we were able to bring real time data to users through built in touch screen performance trackers in each rower. This design redefines what spaces that support active lifestyles can look like. The supporting spaces are refined and curated to influence members to interact and socialize before and after workouts. This creates community and transparency between members and trainers.
What was the brief?
Health House is about building culture, community, motivation, and encouragement through rowing. Health
House wanted to let its members track their performance and offer them a higher

The location in Prairie Village, Kansas, amplifies that notion with an immersive experience catering to rowers. Every design move communicates the culture of Health House. From the moment you cross over the threshold, to an innovative rowing experience and video wall, to a social space, the members of Health House are engaged and know they are part of the community.
Who are the clients and what's interesting about them?
Clients are fitness-minded individuals committed to rowing. The new design has launched Health House full steam into the digital age of fitness. Members get a live feed of their achievements during a workout through a massive video wall and individual touch pads built into each rower. The studio feels luxurious and offers multiple amenities including a protein/ juice bar, day care, locker room, and lounge.
Health House is all about brining clean living and fostering community in Kansas City through fitness and nutrition. The space encourages users to live their lives in a healthy way by harnessing the power of rowing.
