Axis House as Design & Build

Introduction

The Hendy Group, a well established name in the automotive industry, approached AXIS House to transform their recently acquired Tonbridge site into a modern, high-impact dealer showroom aligned with the exacting standards of two globally recognised car brands.

This challenge required more than a straightforward refurbishment. It called for a creative solution that would balance the distinct identities of two major brands within one cohesive space, all while navigating the constraints of an older, irregularly shaped building.

The project demanded a complete overhaul, from revitalising a worn exterior to designing a fresh, functional interior. With rising costs and tight budget constraints, AXIS House had to find innovative solutions to maintain quality without compromising on design.

Given the high stakes, Hendy needed a partner capable of tackling complex challenges and delivering high quality results - this is where AXIS House stepped up.

Brand Compliance in Older Buildings

Hendy Group's primary objective was to update their showrooms to create sleek, brand-compliant environments. This is easier said than done. Automotive brands like Nissan, Renault, and KIA have stringent corporate identity (CI) guidelines crafted for European markets with uniform, newer buildings.

A Transformative Solution

Converting an industrial warehouse unit into grade-A office space was a significant undertaking, made more challenging by the need to complete it within a tight timeframe and without impacting live operations for existing client sites.

First off, structural and safety surveys were undertaken to assess the condition of the building and determine the full extent of works needed. Extensive staff consultations followed before the concept and technical design teams set to work developing the master renovation plan.

This included the following key elemnts:

- Considered separation of the warehouse and office areas

- Two-storey office layour to optimise floor space and enable a range of different working zones.

- A full height, central atrium to create a striking focal point and multi-functional workspace.

- Glazed facade and skylights

- Feature staircase and lighting

- Multiple meeting rooms and flexible space configurations

- Large breakout or kitchen space

- Exposed utilities for a contemporary office aesthetic

Testimonial

I need someone I have complete confidence in, that can work with us and be able to think laterally. It's unusual for a supplier to have such an impact on the fabric of the building but you understand the complexities and challenges of our industry. You have to be problem solvers. Not everyone can do that. AXIS House put the effort in to quote carefully and accurately from the start. You are always on time and deliver solutions that work within our parameters.

If AXIS House was a car, what brand would it be and why?

"AXIS House's work is at the premium end, like a Toyota in terms of reliability and engineering then Lexus or VW come mind for a quality point of view, consistent and with flair."
