The high school needed new laboratories and classrooms. Since the annex needed to be designed to sit on an adjoining slope and attached to the existing building, the school’s second main entrance was moved and integrated into the new structure. Now, its staircase links both old and new. A new ground-level entrance and a newly installed lift finally allow barrier-free access. The annex was constructed with consideration for the school’s existing buildings. It puts a contemporary spin on the facility’s original offset construction and staggered levels as well as on its materials and colours. A proper transition to the residential area has been created by staggering the 3 floors of the expansion.
The annex builds on the strengths of the older building (e.g. wonderful views), while avoiding its weaknesses (e.g. a lack of natural lighting). The new structure is set deep into the slope to retain the beautiful views from the older building and to provide views also throughout the entire new building.
And despite the annex being situated on a hillside, it has a bright and friendly feel in contrast to the older building. Large windowpanes and skylights allow abundant light into the building, while yellow walls and windows conjure an invigorating atmosphere that changes throughout the day.
