The overall renovation strategy for this semi-detached house in northwest Washington DC consists of a series of “surgical” alterations that contrast existing historic elements with new modern interventions. This approach to sustainable design through preservation and re-use offers a new understanding of the original architecture.

The design solution included the following interventions: 

OPERATIONS – Original threshold frames are “objectified” through the removal of adjacent walls in the Living Room and Master Bedroom entry. The original fireplace opening was retained while a new gas unit slides in front of it. The glass panes from the jalousie porch windows were re-purposed as a stacked light element adjacent to an altered frame. The original wood flooring and second floor doors were refurbished, and the existing radiators were stripped and repositioned along with new ones. New bamboo cabinets attach to a modified existing frame and sit adjacent to the original stairs which have been abstracted to black and white. 

COLOR MARKINGS - Color is used to express “spatial pockets” or frames such as the Master Bedroom vestibule, fireplace cavity, Kitchen backsplash and exterior balcony. Altered thresholds and trim remain abstract in black and white. Large surfaces such as floors, ceilings, and exterior siding are neutral to further accentuate the figural qualities of the new composition. Bold colors throughout the house accentuate new elements, while complimenting the Owners’ art collection (all local artists).

OPEN FLOW – The elimination of walls between rooms on the main level allows for continuous passage and views from the front of house to the folding glass doors in the rear. The new rear addition enlarges the Master Suite and deck above, while extending the Kitchen and Living space below. The large rear windows, skylights, and glass opening in the second floor, bring natural light into the expanded and original spaces.
