Horizontal Folds

As an operational tool in Architecture “the Fold” is explored throughout the notion of self-analogy and likeness, which implies repetition, and also as self-interruption-the fold within a fold-which in turn manifests itself as a continuous discontinuity. With the first notion, “the Fold” creates an architectural discourse enriched with philosophical and morphological characteristics whereas in the notion of continuous discontinuity it adheres to more mathematical characteristics introducing movement and strata. In the particular project, “the Fold” is used as an operational and expressive tool to create a continuous facade connecting the 3 buildings, with a rather generic massing, in a seamless whole.

The flowing continuous “loop”-façade- is articulated around horizontal folds, in a sophisticated play, in the form of continuous lines and punctuations, interrupted momentarily by the long view towards the horizon. The continuous undulating façade sits “lightly” between the green surface of the ground and the blue of the horizon. In terms of materiality the folds are expressed in white corian to ensure the smoothness of the flowing curves. Once inhabited, the facade will be enriched with additional elements, which in extent, will add layers of depth.
