The house for a retired couple from Berlin lies in a small street leading to the Scharmützelsee in Bad Saarow.
The starting point of the design is the central very spacious living room with stove and oven, thus a “primal house”. Two bedrooms on one side, the workshop on the opposite side, and the bathroom and the utility room on the entrance side fit together as a spatial stratum around this core, like a shroud or a shell.
In the living room, the construction of the house is recognisable: two purlins rest on the load-bearing side walls, one of which—because it is cantilevered—is built more strongly. Instead of collar beams, which would have to be quite strong given the considerable span of the space, filigree discs reinforce the ridge triangle and, in the house of the avid boat builder, are reminiscent of bulkheads.
The projecting roof is only slightly inclined and is bent once on the long sidesto decimate the height. Hipped over the octagonal floor plan and made of shimmering zinc sheet, it spans the house in facets—almost like a diamond. The outer walls of larch as three-layer panels (the panel dimension specified the height) are stained silver.
