Designed by architect Mayra Casalli, this residence in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais, embraces natural materials, expansive openings, and interconnected spaces to create a sophisticated and timeless home.
Contemporary architecture takes on a warm and sensory interpretation in House R|M, a residential project designed by Casalli Arquitetura, led by architect Mayra Casalli. Located in Pouso Alegre, Minas Gerais, Brazil, the 265-square-meter single-family residence was conceived to express sophistication, functionality, and a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces, with family interaction and well-being at the heart of the design.
More than a contemporary home, the project was born from the homeowners' dream of creating a place where they could enjoy meaningful family moments, welcome friends, and watch their son grow in a light-filled, comfortable environment immersed in nature. "Our goal was to design a home that naturally balanced sophistication and warmth. We wanted elegant spaces that also conveyed comfort, a sense of belonging, and a better quality of life for the family's daily routine," explains Mayra Casalli.
The home's layout was carefully planned to maximize natural light, cross ventilation, and visual openness. Large glazed openings connect the social areas to the outdoor living spaces, creating a fluid relationship with the swimming pool, deck, and leisure areas.
Materiality is one of the project's defining elements. Atacama natural stone, Via Láctea granite, travertine, natural wood, glass, and aluminum brise-soleils were combined in a balanced composition to create a sophisticated, timeless, and welcoming architectural language. "We strongly believe in the power of materials to evoke emotions. Natural materials bring permanence, texture, and warmth, resulting in architecture that remains elegant over time," says Mayra Casalli.
The open-plan living area serves as the heart of the residence, establishing an immediate visual connection with the outdoors. Wood, natural stone, and carefully designed lighting create a refined yet inviting atmosphere, while the dining room, kitchen, and gourmet area were conceived to encourage social interaction and spatial continuity.
The gourmet area enjoys complete integration with the swimming pool and outdoor deck, reinforcing the concept of living without boundaries between indoor and outdoor environments. A wood-clad ceiling adds visual warmth while strengthening the home's contemporary identity.
The private quarters were designed to promote comfort and tranquility. The master suite functions as a peaceful retreat, featuring neutral tones, soft lighting, and natural materials. Meanwhile, the master bathroom incorporates natural stone and delicate textures to create a spa-inspired atmosphere.
Another highlight of the project is the meticulous attention to detail and custom millwork. Organic-shaped elements, handcrafted natural wood furniture, and a bespoke stone fireplace reinforce the home's sophisticated yet welcoming character. "More than creating a visually beautiful residence, our intention was to design a home that fosters meaningful experiences and genuine connections between its inhabitants and the spaces they live in. Every room was designed to be experienced in a fluid and emotional way," adds Mayra Casalli.
Completed over approximately three years, from design to construction, House R|M reflects Casalli Arquitetura's signature approach, defined by the integration of contemporary architecture, nature, functionality, and well-being.
