This home and studio is set within an 1860’s coach house in a narrow downtown laneway comprised of garages and compact infills. The approach to the project is to retain much of the existing inner and outer construction while layering in select materiality in order to arrive at a new understanding of the whole. The street level is refaced with black metal panels and an oversized sliding door. New materials are left in a raw state to establish a direct relation to the existing brick walls and wood floors. Uninhabitable void spaces clad in plywood surround a new upper sleeping level, and serve as lightwells for the studio spaces below.
