Urban building block between 19th century town and post-war modernism
Not far from Bremen‘s Weser Stadium, at the level of the „Am Hulsberg“ tram stop, five different streets meet; the homogeneous development of Bremen‘s Gründerzeit eastern suburbs meets large-scale post-war buildings and loosened-up urban structures here. After winning the competition, a six-storey residential and commercial building was realised in close cooperation with the client and the local building authority in this heterogeneously built and multi-layered environment. Within the scope of the project costs, a shop and 15 residential units of various sizes were developed, allowing for flexible letting of the building.
The building structure takes up the complexity of the site on the tapering plot and channels it into a new figure that calms the heterogeneous structure. At the same time, the architecture consciously takes up traditional lines of Bremen‘s building culture. This is reflected not only in the façade material used, but also in the different eaves edges and projections and recesses of the respective storeys. This complexity is also continued spatially and atmospherically in the interior of the house with different room heights and meandering wall courses.
The result is a self-confident urban building block that adds something new to the site in its own way, without seeming alien or out of place. The house serves as a mediator between the architectural styles and different building heights on the Hulsberg, creates living space and thus places itself in the service of the city in a down-to-earth way.
