Fully restored Bungalow with new bath, porch system, and carport

In the small town of Iota in Louisiana rice country, the IotaHouse is both rehabilitation and a modernization. The first goal is to rejuvenate a 100-year-old bungalow. The house belonged to the client’s grandparents and remains a family heritage. While rehabilitation appears clear (complete gut and replacement), it is compounded by a desire to modernize the house to make it leasable. The client requires the 2-bd/1 bath house to become a 3-bd/2 bath with master suite. The new master suite is to act as either a master bedroom or an office suite. The client also requests the project create a more coherent relationship with the corner lot and community. The resolution exists between what is and what will be. New construction consists of two outbuildings (an outhouse and carport) that connect to the original structure with a new wrap-around porch. The porch negotiates multiple criteria. It satisfies the client’s goals, is a slip joint between new and old, is embedded contextually in Southern Louisiana, and harmonizes the scheme both internally and externally. In Louisiana, where culture and tradition is entrenched in the way habitation has been established and constructed, the project practices to contribute to this rich and unique tradition.
