A dark timber door fitted with ornate shell-shaped brass hardware opens into the apartment. The foyer wall is finished in a plain, textured white brick effect, and the only ornament against it is a carved silver mirror hanging above a console. The console holds a black Buddha figure, and further into the foyer hangs a single framed piece, a violin that has been in the family for over a hundred years, the one object in the entry that carries history rather than design intent.
The foyer leads straight into a mudroom, finished in the same textured wall as the entry. Tucked into a corner of the balcony, accessed directly off the living room, a small bar sits close enough to the main gathering space to feel connected to it, and far enough to feel like a step away from it. Two upholstered chairs sit around a small glass-topped table, built for a conversation between a small group rather than a crowd.
