The Kostverloren tunnel - designed by architects Maurer United - is constructed for non-motorised transport only, and provides a direct link between Nieuwstad and Noorderhaven. Work started on the tunnels in 2013. They have been built by BAM Infra and were commissioned by railway administrator ProRail and the town of Zutphen. The tunnels are funded by the Dutch state, the province of Gelderland and the town of Zutphen. They are one of the many investments that ProRail, NS trains and the town of Zutphen have made in recent years to improve public experience of the railways of Zutphen.
