Project Overview

KYLU is a 1,592 sq ft creative workspace tucked into the heart of Swiss Cottage, designed for the team and collaborators of a local entrepreneur. The project came to us through a returning residential client who wanted her professional environment to feel completely different from her home — more expressive, more creative, and unmistakably her own.

Our brief was to give the space a bold identity while working strategically with what was already there. At Supremati, we believe good design isn't about excess — it's about intention. KYLU became an opportunity to explore how thoughtful, well-placed decisions can elevate a workspace regardless of budget, and to demonstrate that a modest intervention, executed with conviction, can carry real architectural presence.

Working With the Building, Not Against It

When we first walked the space, we were clear that stripping everything back wasn't the right answer — environmentally or architecturally. The original interior had character worth keeping: poured concrete floors, an industrial staircase, and a structural rhythm that gave the building its bones.

Rather than reconstruct, we reused. By retaining the concrete flooring and staircase finishes, we avoided the waste and cost of demolition and let the building's original story remain part of the new one. This freed us to concentrate budget and energy where they would be felt most — on the moments that define how the space is experienced day to day.

The compact plan came with one obvious challenge: a series of large square columns punctuating the floor. We saw them not as obstacles but as the starting point for the project's identity.

Sculptural Columns and a Falling Leaf

Our most defining move blurs the line between architecture and sculpture. We reimagined each structural column as an abstract, tree-like form, turning what could have been disguised or apologised for into the signature gesture of the interior. The columns no longer interrupt the space — they shape it.

This botanical thread carries into the boardroom, where we designed a bespoke table in the form of a falling leaf, manufactured in collaboration with Melner Ltd. For us, it captures something we wanted the whole project to express: the resilience and quiet beauty of nature finding its place inside an urban environment.

Detail as Identity

Throughout the office, we developed custom joinery for the kitchen, reception, and workspaces, each piece tuned to the proportions of its room. Colour was introduced strategically and drawn directly from the client's brand identity, so the architecture and the business read as one coherent expression. Statement tiling in the social and bathroom areas brings texture and confidence to the spaces where people pause, and we selected the seating carefully to balance comfort with character.

A Philosophy of Intentional Design

Rather than spread the budget thinly across every surface, we concentrated it on the elements that carry the experience — the columns, the boardroom, the joinery, the moments of colour and tile. Everything else was allowed to remain quiet.

KYLU reflects what we believe at Supremati: that when design is intentional, even a light-touch intervention can achieve a strong architectural presence — and that the most distinctive workspaces are often the ones built on restraint, not excess.
