Located on a family estate in the mountains of Cundinamarca, Deck La Ilusión is a small space conceived for contemplation, prayer, and engagement with the surrounding landscape. The project emerged from a simple reflection: how to create a meaningful place through minimal intervention within a site that already possesses a strong natural identity.
The intervention occupies a natural clearing defined by existing trees, shrubs, and large boulders. Rather than altering these conditions to accommodate a new construction, the project embraces them as an essential part of its spatial configuration.
The deck consists of a 6 × 6 meter timber platform supported by an elevated steel structure. The system rests on isolated concrete footings and is complemented by a draining layer of stone and gravel placed over geotextile fabric, reducing direct contact with the ground and minimizing disturbance to the existing terrain.
The project's primary operation lies in building around the elements that gave character to the site. Existing trees were preserved and incorporated into the geometry of the deck, while the boulders remained in their original positions and became part of the architectural composition. The platform adapts to these pre-existing conditions, establishing a continuous relationship between architecture and landscape.
The orientation responds to the visual qualities of the site. Facing west, the deck opens toward views of Cerro de Pionono and the Bogotá Savannah, making the landscape the central protagonist of the experience. Rather than producing a new image of the territory, the intervention provides a precise vantage point from which it can be observed.
The perception of the space changes with light and atmospheric conditions. During the day, views extend across the mountains and surrounding pastures. At night, the area's limited light pollution allows for exceptional observation of the night sky, expanding the contemplative character of the place.
At one end of the platform, a small altar serves as a point of orientation and permanence. Its presence is intentionally discreet, supporting moments of prayer, meditation, or quiet observation of the landscape.
Deck La Ilusión is not conceived as an autonomous object within the territory. Instead, it acts as a minimal piece of infrastructure that intensifies the relationship between people and their environment. Through a restrained and precise intervention, the project seeks to reveal the value of what was already there: the trees, the rocks, the mountains, the Bogotá Savannah, and the sky. An architecture of minimal intervention, designed to experience the landscape with greater attention.
