The design concept is driven by the dialectic relationships forming the triptych of nature, memory, and form. At the core of this project’s approach lies the olive tree as a compositional center of gravity, while its enveloping volumes – which allure to these of a traditional olive press factory – set an earthy scene. Three adjacently located apartments in a building of the 1950ies were turned into a 6000ft2 flat. The spacious, light-flooded rooms are connected through a central corridor, while the 1700ft2 living and dining area occupies the whole west part, giving view to the Madrid skyline on three sides. Two of the big openings have been converted in huge eye-catching panels of fixed glazing that impressively display the view on the city. We were inspired to create our first authentic living space to reflect our client’s desire to live and work in his painting studio. The design emulates his painting style and personal lifestyle by using natural materials, minimalist values, and bridging social context within a live-work environment. The overall form takes on an ethos of monumental simplicity which inherently captures panoramic lake views from the steep mountainside terrain. ​ As part of authentic living, this studio is entirely devoid of added paints or stains. While the original site offered potential for stunning views of the Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, and downtown San Francisco, the house suffered from unusually narrow and dark interior spaces. Using the sweeping vistas as a guiding vision, the remodel transformed the top floor into one great room, bound by windows on three sides, and pulled the top floor envelope back from the lower façade to allow for a deck and planters. The main deck provides an outdoor living space with fireplace, windscreen, custom planners, and an operable awning, and a smaller deck offers space for grilling and a small garden.
