LAB is a beautiful example of the “couture architecture” Dieter Vander Velpen Architects is known for: A detailed, high-end design matching the needs and personality of the client. The use of high quality materials and a refined design make LAB the perfect environment for a unique training experience.

The interior concept for LAB is marked by two important aspects: the materialisation and the sleek grid that forms the base for the design. With its high-end finishes and wellness vibe LAB deviates from the typical industrial aesthetic that characterizes most gyms.

The luxurious material palette consists of marble, black steel, tropical wood and chrome. Nero Antico, a black marble with dramatic veining, is used for statement pieces like the boxing ring, the counter in the entrance hall and 8 meter long washbasins in the dressing rooms.

Some important details were executed in black steel, a material that matches the sports accessories of the gym. Chrome adds a touch of refined contrast with its glossy, reflective finish. Amara Ebony veneer covers the central walls. In the exterior walls, the many windows provide ample natural light. To filter the sunlight and create extra privacy and a homely feel, Belgian linen curtains by Verilin were added all around the space. The black steel is also balanced by upholstered paneling in the same colour for a softer vibe and good acoustics.

This mix of materials is built on a tight grid of 90x90 cm that runs on the walls and continues on the ceilings. These decorative modules also hide all the technical details like sound, lighting and ventilation, creating a strong yet calm image. Disruptive details are hidden this way, pulling the focus to beautiful details and sports equipment. The central open space was left very flexible to optimize the personal training experience. The eyecatcher in this space is the boxing ring with a Nero Antico marble plinth, a nod to founder Julien Prudhomme’s time as a pro boxer.

On the other side of the room there is a square platform, surrounded by integrated motion sensors on the ceiling to measure and support performance. The high-tech way of working is an essential aspect of the gym. Measuring and logging data about strength, skills and balance are at the base of every personalised program.

The treatment rooms offer some privacy and are completely clad in the same warm tropical wood with wash basins in Nero Antico and chrome faucets. To give a true wellness experience the details in the interior were very important. Together with graphic design agency Lobster and Verilin, custom towels were created. With details like these, the goal was to create a luxurious atmosphere with international standards. In the dressing rooms, the wood veneer and linen curtains are a perfect backdrop for the 8m long washbasins made in Nero Antico, paired with big mirrors, chrome faucets and decorative pendant lighting. A wooden shelf with the custom towels and exclusive soaps evoke the feeling of wellness or a luxurious bathroom. The doors of the showers are seamlessly integrated in the wooden wall.

Adjacent to the gym there is juicebar Dose, where both gym clients and outside guests can get healthy juices, snacks and coffee. The general interior concept of LAB was extended but with slightly different details. Centrally located in the space is a big island in long glazed back tiles with an integrated planter and ice box to display fresh fruit and juices. Behind this counter is a minimalistic mirrored wall with shelving for all the fresh products LAB has to offer, and finally the Amara Ebony veneer wall continues the concept of the gym and adds warmth with its deep colouring. Dose has an outside terrace for the summer months, a perfect spot to relax after your training or meet up with friends.
