Lapa Duplex DP

João Tiago Aguiar, arquitectos as Architects

Transformation of an apartment, located on the top floor of a building from the 1920s, into a duplex with a view overlooking the Tagus River and to one of Lisbon's most emblematic landmarks: the “25 de Abril” bridge.

The main change in this project, is the use of the attic and the subsequent creation of two large dormers and their corresponding terraces (facing east and west). These changes have brought profound adjustments in the organization of the space, which is now more rational and pragmatic. This utilitarian side is the essence of the project that does not neglect a more relaxed and minimalistic aesthetic dimension.

This expansion allowed the creation of a duplex in which flexible solutions suited to urban lifestyles were chosen, while privacy was preserved. The social and private areas, separated on two floors, allow the house to be adjusted to the needs of daily life, establishing a connection between the dwelling and its residents.

On the upper floor, the entire social area, with the kitchen open to the living room, the adjoining dining room, and terraces in the main facade and back, meet the demand for closer and more continuous socialization. The design of two new dormers benefited the space, which is now wider and more open, as required by the arrival of a new member to the family.

On the lower and entry floor is the private area, occupied by four bedrooms, one of which is an ensuite, while the other three share the same bathroom. A storage and a guest toilet were created to take the most out of the stairway garret space.

It is worth mentioning the nobility and simplicity of the materials used, such as the oak wood floor, the glass, and the Estremoz white marble stone.
