The Lenwil Elementary School Library project is a thoughtfully crafted addition to the existing campus, designed as a place of curiosity, comfort, and discovery. More than just a new space, the project reimagines how the library serves students and supports the evolving needs of the school community.
The new 3,100-square-foot library provides a vibrant, engaging environment for young learners. Bold, joyful colors animate the interior, sparking imagination and encouraging exploration while fostering a strong sense of belonging. Within the open plan, individual moments of quiet reading and collaborative group learning coexist seamlessly—defined not by walls, but by light, form, and carefully scaled architectural elements. A generous reading room, colorful book stacks, intimate reading houses, staff support areas, restrooms, and storage spaces come together to create a dynamic setting that celebrates the joy of learning.
Small-scale “reading houses” were integrated into the library as focal elements, remaining visually connected to the main book stacks while offering a sense of enclosure ideal for one-on-one instruction, small groups, and after-school programming. Designed with pitched forms and saturated colors, these structures create a village-like landscape within the larger room. Their residential scale feels approachable and intuitive for elementary-aged students, subtly signaling quieter zones for focused activities.
To support larger collaborative learning, strategically placed bump-outs introduce flexible zones furnished with tables and chairs. Lower book stacks define these areas without blocking sightlines, preserving visibility while establishing distinct learning environments. Built-in window benches line the perimeter, maximizing usable floor area and encouraging quiet reading in abundant natural light. A strategically positioned smart board allows the space to transition effortlessly into a group learning environment, reinforcing the library’s role as a multifunctional educational hub.
Overhead, a curved ceiling plane and continuous blue soffit create a clear spatial hierarchy and a sense of movement throughout the room. This architectural gesture guides circulation, organizes activity zones, and differentiates spaces without physical barriers, adding character while maintaining openness and supervision.
Beyond the new addition, thoughtful renovations throughout the campus further enhanced functionality and flow. The former library was transformed into a classroom and two offices, while the adjacent computer lab received updated finishes to align with the new design language. Additional offices were reconfigured into a classroom, and improvements to a corridor and four restrooms introduced modern fixtures and finishes.
