Les Balcons de Sermenaz

The project comprises residential buildings integrated into the natural slope of the site. It combines private ownership housing, social homeownership units and intermediate housing, offering a diversity of living arrangements within a coherent urban framework. Large terraces, private gardens and rooftop living spaces form an integral part of the residential experience. The stepped morphology extends domestic life outdoors while preserving views toward the Rhône Valley and the surrounding landscape. The landscape strategy combines biodiversity corridors, rainwater management and extensive permeable ground surfaces. Gabion retaining walls structure the topography and limit earthworks, while outdoor spaces connect housing with the Sermenaz Forest.

Located on the edge of the Sermenaz Forest in Rillieux-la-Pape, the project occupies a rare position within the urban fabric: a threshold between the city and a natural landscape. Rather than establishing a boundary, the proposal creates a gradual transition between built and natural environments. Rooted in the site's topography, the buildings are fragmented into smaller volumes and arranged in terraces that follow the slope of the hill. This strategy reduces the perceived scale of the development, preserves long views toward the Rhône Valley and allows landscape and biodiversity corridors to extend through the site. Terraces, rooftop living spaces and outdoor circulation areas extend domestic life beyond the apartment. Gabion retaining walls structure the terrain and limit earthworks, while lime-based renders in warm mineral tones create a visual continuity with the hillside landscape. The project establishes a dialogue between housing, topography and the Sermenaz Forest.
