A significant alteration to a semi-detached house in Sydney's east for a family of sun chasers. Set high on a ridge behind a row of olive trees, two new double-height volumes clad in water struck bricks are nestled behind the front of the original house. Like the family the house was designed for, the house chases the light too, setting itself up to receive the colours that change through the day and the shadows the sun casts across surfaces both inside and out. The northernmost volume twists ever so slightly up and out to capture light and views across to the west and the north. The dragon scale brick pattern allows the western wall to twist and shift up and around to bring the master bedroom out across the rear of the house, creating a cantilever that protects the kitchen doors which open out on to the rear terrace below.

The polished ground floor plane to plane folds down towards a northern courtyard and plunge pool. Materially it begins with the dark stained oak floorboards, stepping down into a polished concrete plane that folds out to the rear terrace. Punctuation points of brickwork, at thresholds, stairs and outdoor seating plinths complete the composition.

Internally the centre of the house is held by a 6m high space that holds a sculptural stair housed in a polished plaster shell that connects the 3 levels of the home. It sits unadorned in white and holds the house in place. Some corners of the shell curve whilst other edges are sharp, and orthogonal-all designed to quietly shift light around the volume and provide the counterpoint to featured artwork, light fittings, furniture, and joinery. Materially concise and spatially curious, the Light House is an exercise in creating considered, polite spaces across a small footprint.
