This reinvention of an existing building situated immediately adjacent to a unique lighthouse from the 1800s, originally converted from an old smokestack, is located on the Baltimore Waterfront. The lighthouse and the existing building act as the head piece for a marina comprising approximately 400 boat slips. In addition to reconstructing the slips to better accommodate larger boats, the area of the site immediately surrounding the lighthouse will be redeveloped as a new entrance to the property, including a contemporary reimagining of the existing tiki bar and a lounge pool. The building itself will be completely renovated to house expanded marina amenity spaces (ie. Lounge, gym, locker rooms, etc.) and a new restaurant concept intended to conceptually bring a little of the Mediterranean to the Patapsco River.
This interpretation of a Mediterranean resort, particularly referencing the Balearic Islands, also influences the re-cladding strategy which utilizes a simple wood shell wrapper coupled with expansive operable glazed walls intended to amplify panoramic views from the interior spaces out into the harbor.
Also included in the overall plan was an amenity space revision to a relaxing lounge area. GriD was tasked with designing boater amenities for patrons of the waterfront. Included in the total renovations were a central lounge and gym, as well as a generous courtyard with a pool and bathhouse. The resulting interventions transformed the site into a destination location, with expansive views of the marina.
