LlamaBar DC is a light-fi lled café designed to bring the restorative qualities of nature into the urban fabric of Washington, DC. Conceived as a welcoming destination for gathering, working, and everyday rituals, the project demonstrates how thoughtful design can foster a sense of calm, connection, and well-being within a dense city environment.
Drummond Projects organized the interior to maximize access to natural light, using expansive glazing to draw daylight deep into the space and create an atmosphere that feels open, airy, and inviting throughout the day. The design embraces biophilic principles, recognizing the positive impact that light, natural materials, and greenery can have on the human experience.
Wood wall paneling and custom millwork introduce warmth, texture, and visual continuity, helping defi ne circulation paths and seating zones while reinforcing a sense of craftsmanship. Integrated plantings are woven throughout the café, softening the interior and strengthening the connection between the built environment and nature. Together, these elements create a layered and tactile experience that encourages guests to slow down and engage with their surroundings.
The seating strategy supports a variety of uses, from communal tables that encourage interaction and collaboration to more intimate settings that accommodate focused work or quiet conversation. Rather than prescribing a single mode of occupation, the space was designed to adapt to the changing rhythms of the day and the diverse needs of its patrons.
Carefully calibrated lighting enhances the café's natural brightness while emphasizing architectural details and material textures. The result is an environment that feels both energetic and serene, balancing social engagement with moments of retreat.
LlamaBar DC refl ects Drummond Projects' ongoing interest in creating spaces that support community, wellness, and meaningful human connection. Through a considered integration of materiality, spatial organization, natural light, and biophilic design, the project transforms the everyday café experience into something more enduring: a place to gather, recharge, and belong.
SUSTAINABILITY CONSIDERATIONS
LlamaBar DC was designed around principles of occupant wellness, daylight access, and material longevity. Expansive storefront glazing maximizes the use of natural daylight, reducing reliance on artifi cial lighting during operating hours while enhancing the comfort and well-being of occupants.
Biophilic design strategies were incorporated throughout the project through the integration of natural materials, indoor plantings, and visual connections to daylight. These elements contribute to a healthier and more restorative interior environment while strengthening the relationship between occupants and nature.
The project prioritizes durable, long-lasting materials, including wood wall paneling and custom millwork designed to withstand the demands of a high-traffi c hospitality environment. By emphasizing material longevity and timeless design, the space is intended to reduce the need for frequent replacement and future renovation.
