Lotus House

This is a redevelopment project located close to a large park. It’s an energy-efficient modern home with timeless appeal. Large wraparound windows enhance a flexible, open floor plan. Although its architecture is modern, we used large expanses of glass, deep eaves and natural materials to soften the edges so it integrates seamlessly with its context. The focal point of the home is a dramatic two-storey light well traversed by a second floor bridge. A large square skylight washes daylight down into the centre of the home. Custom details designed for the buyers include extensive built-in cabinetry, a large theatre room and a “man cave” garage in which the owner can work on and display a collection of classic sportscars.Designed for indoor/outdoor living, both ends of the main living area open up via large sliding doors onto a spectacular outdoor living space.

What was the brief?

Design a bright, airy home with indoor/outdoor living as a driving principle. Bring as much natural light deep into the central spaces of the home as possible given the tight urban site. Use fundamental design of building and site to create a natural climate control system that required minimal energy inputs.

What were the key challenges?

As with many tight urban properties, access to light in the central spaces of the home was a challenge. We also needed to design a home on a relatively tight site that used cleverly-designed millwork and efficient flow of space to ensure it functioned as well as a much large home might have done.

What were the solutions?

Large sliding doors anchor both ends of the Living/Dining space, allowing the exterior decks to be used as daily living space. Custom kitchen millwork conceals integrated appliances and wraps around into the pantry and mudroom behind to create a clean, well-organized entertaining area. A custom, 35’ long credenza extends the length of the house, linking the dining room with the living room. In the living area it’s a media cabinet while in the eating area it’s a dining hutch.

The second floor is divided into Owner’s zone and kids/guest zone, separated by a bridge across the light well for privacy. A large laundry room is accessible both from Owner’s Suite and kids bedroom area for ease of use. The Owner’s suite allows someone using the dressing room to exit home without disturbing adjacent sleeper

Deep eaves shade the large windows to keep interiors comfortable with minimal energy input. All windows are triple-glazed with many opening units to ensure winter performance and natural summer ventilation.

A dramatic two-storey central light well divides upper floor into adults’ and kids’ zones. A large square skylight washes daylight down into the centre of the home.

Existing mature vegetation was preserved and protected during construction. Adjacent large trees regulate indoor temperature by providing shade in summer, allowing for sun in winter.

Large triple glazed windows with many openers, high efficiency appliances, hard surfaces and an air barrier building envelope work together to make a healthy and environmentally friendly indoor environment.
