The market town of St. Michael im Lungau assumed political responsibility for strengthening the connections between local clubs, expanding the range of sports and recreational facilities, and enhancing the social community, tourism, and the town center. In the newly constructed sports, family, and leisure center, new sports facilities were created alongside a grass pitch and an artificial turf field for football. These include facilities for ice stock sport (the first covered ice stock hall in Lungau), tennis, beach volleyball, and ice skating.
The surroundings of the construction site are characterized by a heterogeneous building structure, including single-family homes, small to medium-sized residential buildings, and a variety of commercial structures. To the south, the property is bordered by a river, and the surrounding area features abundant greenery and agricultural land, giving the setting a rural character.
Two architectural volumes define the importance of the public use of the new sports center with confidence. Upon arriving at the site, the grandstand building forms the entrance and address, with the multipurpose hall positioned behind it. Both buildings are oriented north-south, allowing for the optimal arrangement of surrounding playing and training fields. A large open staircase leads to the elevated grandstand area, from which several sports fields can be viewed.
The adjacent spaces, such as the multipurpose room and the canteen including a bar area, are designed to be open and transparent. Beneath them are changing rooms for various sports and auxiliary rooms. Interlocking building volumes guide visitors openly through this level, creating strong visual and functional connections to the surrounding sports facilities. Beyond its use for ice stock sport, the multipurpose hall is designed for a wide range of uses, such as events and gatherings for local clubs and organizations.
The choice of materials and construction methods was derived from traditional local building practices and adapted to meet modern requirements (timber construction).
