Magasin 3 has simple and clear rooms, it is the art that fills them with dynamism. Conditions that terrify an architect. There is a risk of destroying what is good instead of adding something.
A shift from a traditional art gallery with general opening hours to an art institute with a renewed focus still required some changed room functions, and an architect.
The new entrance needs to function as a welcome room for booked viewings and offer the art gallery'sown publications for sale. It should also enrich the art experience by giving a glimpse of theprocesses behind the artworks and the operation.
The new library should fill the need for more shelf space and a room for teaching, meetings andconversations. The previously terrified architect begins to dig on site. White walls and the tangible presence of the columns. Existing shelves and a suspended ceiling made of brass fabric would be a shame to tear down (architect: JohnRobert Nilsson).
The bookshelves can be reused, moved and supplemented with something completely different. A pink lacquered storage shelf, draped with Lycra fabric on wavy acrylic glass mounting details. A grainy blue carpet and the longest table possible with an irregularly cut leather cloth that hides a text on the edge of the tabletop.
The bookshelves, both new and old, face outwards and provide free access to the books without disturbing the meeting in the centre of the room. A library that is turned inwards.
In the entrance, the white wall is cut into flaps that fold out into the room. From the entrance, they do not show their contents, but rather allow the art to take it´s place. “Unity Purity Occasional” by Charles Long and three new sofas by Carin
Ellberg, Lap‐See Lam and Bella Rune. On the serving table stands a samovar with mint tea. The furniture is marbled after the model from Adolf Loos, Villa Müller. The book table serves as both a workplace and a cash register. It is reused and supplemented with a marbled table top and stainless steel drawer. On top of the table stands a podium for the guest book. After the visit to the art gallery, the unfolded wall is visible
from the other side and reveals itself as an open book.
