Designed by architect Simara Mello, the project of this 540 m² duplex was born from a relationship of trust and partnership built over the years. The client, a personal friend of the professional, had already entrusted her with the design of other homes and was now seeking a tailored project for the family’s new residence. Located in Curitiba, Paraná, in the South region of Brazil, the property was acquired during the construction phase, which allowed for complete oversight and the customization of every detail from the start.
The family consists of a couple of entrepreneurs, the husband also a lawyer, and three daughters at different stages of life. The eldest is in university and currently living abroad temporarily. With an intense routine and precious moments of togetherness, the desire was for a functional, welcoming, and elegant home that would adapt to the dynamism of daily life while reflecting the style and personal interests of the resident. Passionate about fashion, tableware, and setting tables, the client has a keen eye for aesthetics and values the details that make gatherings at home even more special.
The architect followed all stages of construction, which allowed for significant changes to the original layout and the selection of custom materials. One of the key highlights was the exclusive use of natural stone, applied throughout the lower floor’s flooring, countertops, and even pieces of furniture. This material brought visual unity to the spaces and became the starting point for the project concept.
In the layout, the integration of the living rooms was one of the main interventions, with the removal of a dividing wall to create a spacious and fluid environment. The kitchen was also altered and became open, connecting to the dining area and the barbecue through a large multifunctional counter. Another important change was in the staircase opening, originally surrounded by walls intended for a private elevator installation. As the clients chose not to install the elevator, since the building's existing elevators serve both floors, the walls were eliminated, creating an open staircase and expanding the living room area.
The client wanted a well-lit apartment with a clean aesthetic that would highlight the beautiful view of Barigui Park. The neutral base created by the natural stone allowed the landscape to take center stage. To ensure thermal comfort, especially in a cold city like Curitiba, wood elements and matte finishes were incorporated into the design with balance.
One of the challenges faced by the architect was creating two bedrooms of similar sizes for the twin daughters, so each could have their own study space. One of the suites was expanded toward the mezzanine, balancing the areas and providing welcoming and practical spaces that suited the girls' needs and individuality.
The project also includes custom-made furniture designed to meet the family's habits. In the social area, the multi-use table serves various functions throughout the day, such as meals, study, and work. Support carts and shelves organize the client’s personal tableware collection with charm, always keeping it accessible. Another highlight is the wine display rack, specially designed to house the couple’s wine collection.
Natural lighting was maximized, and artificial lighting appears in a punctual and strategic way, with step lights on the stairs and in circulation areas, as well as decorative wall sconces. The client also often uses candles and table lamps, creating soft and intimate scenes that reinforce the apartment’s cozy atmosphere.
