Matisse X is an experimental interior design project that explores the intersection of Asian-inspired atmosphere, natural materials, and futuristic industrial aesthetics. Conceived as a contemporary specialty coffee environment, the space is designed to create a dialogue between warmth and technology, tradition and innovation.
A central element of the interior is the use of wood treated through the traditional Japanese Yakisugi technique. The wood is intentionally burned to create a deeply textured, charred surface, bringing a sense of warmth, tactility, and natural imperfection into the space. These dark timber surfaces contrast with polished stainless steel, creating a visual tension between organic and industrial materials.
Natural rock is introduced throughout the interior as another important material element. Its raw and irregular character adds a connection to nature, while its sculptural presence creates a strong contrast against the precise and reflective surfaces of the metal. The combination of burnt wood, stone, and stainless steel establishes a material palette that feels both grounded and futuristic.
The floor continues the experimental character of the project through the use of stainless steel, reflecting the warm ambient lighting and surrounding materials. Rather than creating a cold industrial atmosphere, the carefully controlled lighting softens the metallic surfaces and gives the interior a warmer, more immersive character.
Furniture and lighting were selected to complement the architectural language of the space. Pieces from internationally recognized design brands such as Cassina and DeSede contribute a refined contemporary layer, balancing the rawness of the materials with carefully considered forms and proportions.
Matisse X is ultimately conceived as more than a coffee shop. It is an exploration of material, atmosphere, and cultural references, where Asian influences are interpreted through a contemporary and futuristic lens. The result is an interior that combines natural textures, craftsmanship, technology, and bold material contrasts into a distinctive spatial experience.
