This pavilion was constructed on the Shenzhen Civic Square at the invitation of the Hong Kong Shenzhen Biennale for Architecture and Town Planning. It was a challenge to tempt people to use the square, which was usually exclusively reserved for ceremonial purposes, as a public space. A striking pavilion was designed that referred to both a classic line of trees and lampshades, which was in contrast with the enormous exhibition building. The enormous canopies were mounted in a modular grid and cross each other. This created a pleasant ‘inside space’ that was happily used by a large number of visitors during the biennial.
