Located at Enkplatz in Vienna's Simmering district, two landmarked 1960s school buildings underwent a comprehensive renovation and reorganization. Our design respects the heritage of the original structures while establishing a unique, independent identity for each school for the first time. The exterior appearance is carefully preserved, and characteristic elements – such as terrazzo tiles, wooden handrails, French doors, and classroom glass blocks – have been meticulously refurbished or reused wherever possible. A newly built connecting wing bridges the two volumes, seamlessly blending in through its proportions and grid facade, while its flat roof transforms into a lush green break area featuring raised beds and seating.

Inside, each school accommodates 12 classrooms alongside administrative offices, multi-purpose spaces, and group rooms. A new light well and enlarged basement windows flood the lower levels with daylight, enabling their use as functional classrooms. Opening directly onto the schoolyard, the two dining halls create a vibrant gathering space that echoes the building’s broader color palette. Distinct identities are further defined by two separate entrances and a cohesive color scheme: green for the sports- and language-focused OMS I, and blue for the music- and arts-focused OMS II.

While standard classrooms feature calming, neutral tones, the creative and group areas utilize purposeful, energetic accents. Outside, the revitalized forecourt trades hard paving for new trees and inviting seating, creating a cooler microclimate and ensuring full, barrier-free access. Rooftop photovoltaic panels complete this sustainable, holistic architectural concept.
