Originally built in 1958 as a secondary school, the existing building is undergoing a comprehensive renovation and expansion. By increasing the number of classrooms from 14 to 22, we are unlocking new possibilities for modern education. We are transforming the pre-existing layout into a contemporary, cluster-based learning environment designed to foster interaction, collaboration, and individual support. Fortunately, the structural and spatial framework of the original building allows us to implement these modern pedagogical spaces with minimal intervention, upgrading the existing wings to seamlessly match the high architectural quality of the new extension.
The redesign infuses the school with a distinct new identity. A curtain-wall larch facade re-establishes the building as a highly recognizable public landmark, offering a warm, inviting counterpoint to the heterogeneous neighborhood of single-family homes. Integrated facade greening improves the microclimate and allows the architecture to visibly merge with the schoolyard. On the street side, deep terrace incisions break up the building’s volume, creating a sensitive response to the small-scale grain of the surrounding neighborhood.
Our design aims to maximize space for outdoor play, physical movement, and social interaction. Through a highly compact footprint and optimized circulation paths, we have preserved generous, continuous open spaces that offer children ample room to learn, play, and discover together – both inside and out.
