Early 70’s –
Grandma and grandpa buy a nice apartment in a new neighborhood in Tel-Aviv, called Bavli. The 105 sqm apartment has a small kitchen, narrow corridors and a dark entrance hall, a small bathroom with light blue porcelain tiles and rooms with lots of 70’s wallpapers, being covered over the yearsby lots of pictures.
Years go by and we say goodbye to grandma and grandpa. The apartment is rent out.
2015-2017 –
Mom convinces dad to move (back) to Tel-Aviv. They assign me, their architect daughter toredesign the Bavli apartment for them.
The house is being adjusted to the elderly - much wider passageways and doors (to fit future wheelchairs - while hoping it won’t be needed) and a guest room (for a future help person). Besides that - a bigger kitchen, a specious and much naturally lighted Livingroom, a master bedroom with a semi visible study, lots of storage spaces and a big library for the grandkids’ games and for all the books and albums that have been accumulated over the years. One especially loved trick, that aims to control the master bathroom’s privacy vs sharing it, has been designed with the help of a mini inner hall with three doors (two of them magically slide into the walls).
A lot of white, a touch of black, a bit of dark gray, natural oak and natural light – these are the main characters of the design.
Among them - details, details, details – invisible sliding doors, flush doors, flush floor panels, calm lighting elements that blend in, a cozy window seat, high-end furniture design details, colorful cushions, new bedsheets, orchids and even soap bottles. A complete makeover.
The new design acts as a peaceful canvas that is now painted with all of the old memories, collected over the years by mom and dad along with those of grandma and grandpa. Vessels, antique candlesticks, art bought on trips around the world and many pictures. The pictures have been returned to the old walls, only this timethe walls are clear white.
The Bavli apartment is now a new home filled with all of our old memories. The home of mom and dad, who have become themselves now my little girls’ grandma and grandpa.
