The city of Bielefeld has designated a new residential area near the university campus, in which a mixture of single and multi-family homes should contribute to meeting the demand for housing, especially for students. A north-south running green corridor divides the area into two halves. West of the green corridor, a series of semi-detached houses is proposed, which continues the urban scale of the adjacent single-family homes. Their gardens are directly connected to the green area.
East of the green corridor a concept is pursued that focuses on students and proposes a form of housing in which communication is at the center. A kind of campus is formed where freestanding buildings of different heights are arranged offset from each other. The spaces in-between the houses are of special importance. They are not assigned to individual houses but rather form a park-like landscape that is available to all residents as a public space which stimulates and supports exchange and togetherness.
