On a site overlooking the waterfront of the Municipality of Barreiro, the proposal consists of a residential development comprising a multi-family residential building and four single-family dwellings. In order to complete the existing urban fabric while maximising the area available for outdoor spaces, the volumes are aligned with the site's primary access routes: a street to the north and a cul-de-sac to the west.
The elongated apartment block follows the direction of the northern street, taking full advantage of solar exposure and southern views, while allowing the courtyard to function as a landscaped recreational area. The building comprises 20 apartments distributed across three above-ground floors and one basement level dedicated to parking. Conceptually, the building can be understood as a long cork-clad volume resting on a contrasting base, materially establishing a relationship with the native cork oak trees that punctuate the site. Its façades, each with a distinct character, reflect the apartments’ internal organization. On the northern side, facing the street, the façade adopts a more restrained and private expression, shaped by the dwellings' private functions. On the opposite side, large glazed openings associated with the more social areas of the apartments interrupt the cork skin and open the interiors to the unobstructed southern views. Balconies extending from the living spaces animate this façade and strengthen the connection between interior and exterior. The design of the fifth façade – the roof – continues this approach, incorporating intimate terraces and water features that extend domestic life beyond the enclosed interior spaces.
The single-family dwellings complement and reinforce the identity of the apartment block. They are likewise characterised by a material dichotomy: an upper floor clad in cork resting on a lower level finished in grey pigmented render. Adopting the scale and massing of the surrounding context, they are designed through a restrained and contemporary architectural language that integrates harmoniously with the urban setting while expressing a clear sense of innovation and technological sophistication. Arranged in pairs of semi-detached houses, the four dwellings comprise two above-ground floors and one basement level. Their accessible roofs also follow the concept established by the apartment block, with terraces extending everyday living into the open air in a more intimate manner.
Within the courtyard, the intention is to preserve the natural character of the southern landscape. Existing trees are complemented by new native plant species, reinforcing the site's ecological identity. The outdoor space is further enhanced by a south-facing swimming pool and a covered terrace that supports the pool area while framing the cluster of cork oak trees to the west.
