NB2
JAG Studio

NB2 is a private project dedicated to skateboarding as a celebration of leisure. It was designed to be enjoyed in the company of friends, specially, during those vibrant afternoons in Guayaquil where the sunset light is gorgeously reflected on the surrounding palms and other trees.

The program was developed at ground level. Its core, also known as “The Bowl”, fulfils its owner’s wish to practice surfing over concrete. Equipping “The Bowl” is “The Block”, a volume divided by a garden and garden wall into two areas: An open BBQ & Chill area, with direct visuals to the bowl as well as the garden; and an enclosed services area, with toilets and storage space. Because sharing is caring and due to the close relationship between the owner and his neighbours, this last area incorporates a direct access from their property into the project.

The budget was a main design constraint. An honest material palette is evident in grey, from the polished concrete surface of the bowl to the walls’ rugged masonry finish; In black, from the steel structure to the roofing of the block. In galvanized steel, from the upper metal walls to the exposed electrical conduits; And in green, from the leaves of the garden-wall and bushes to the trees shading the concrete benches for skaters to rest.

The Bowl was carefully positioned to have a central role in the experience of the place, and avoid wasted space. Its levels were adapted in response to the high waterbed levels to optimize rainwater drainage and at the same time, provide skaters with ramps for warming up before tackling the bowl. In the block’s case, heavy rains and blazing sun courtesy of the local weather, are dealt with pronounced over hangings and insulated roof panels. The roof tilts opposite to The Bowl, opening and framing the spaces towards the skating and garden area.

Whether It’s surf-skating, barbecuing, having a beer or watching a sunset, the NB2 is a statement for pausing the loud and busy city life to enjoy leisure time in good company.
