The Nine-Square House is a private house located near the Forbidden City. We have made four patio courtyards on the 220 square meter building. In this project, we try to bring something new to the nine-square paradigm. The rooms and patios in the building alternate, although in the downtown area, it is like being in nature. The patio brings light to the second floor below the ground. On the basement level, the West Garden is a bamboo garden that climbs up until the second floor. On the first floor, the South Garden is a water courtyard that brings a fresh breeze to the living room. The North Garden also brings light to the beginning and second basement. The East Garden is the entrance to the house, digesting the height difference between outdoor and indoor. There is a dialogue between the house and the alley.
We have published the book "the Nine-Square House construction note," which records the construction of a small house and a residential interior. In the architectural culture tradition of China, the classic garden is the only type of building with literati participation, including space, philosophy, plants, furniture, poetry, and so on. We draw on the spatial paradigm in the garden and put it in modern life, hoping to blend modern houses with traditional garden poetry.
