Redefining the Tagus Estuary: The Nooba Project in Barreiro

Situated along the southern banks of the Tagus River in Barreiro, Nooba emerges as a new residential neighborhood shaped by its proximity to the estuary and the profound urban transformation sweeping across the region's former industrial lands. The project occupies a strategic position within a broader urban and environmental regeneration effort, where new public spaces, mobility infrastructure, and ecological corridors are redefining the city's relationship with the water. Its planning framework responds to this metropolitan condition by proposing a neighborhood that balances density with openness—positioning housing as the engine of everyday urban life and reinforcing continuity with the revitalized waterfront.

The development strategy is structured in successive phases, allowing the neighborhood to grow in a controlled, cohesive manner. Residential plots are clustered to optimize construction efficiency, streamline underground parking, and allow for flexible combinations of building volumes. Crucially, this phased approach minimizes the impact of ongoing construction on early residents, ensuring that each stage progressively delivers a fully functional and integrated environment.

Architecturally, Nooba introduces a contemporary domestic language that strikes a compelling contrast with Barreiro’s aging building stock, while remaining accessible and deeply rooted in its locale. The housing typologies cater to families seeking generous living areas and a seamless connection to the outdoors, enhanced by inviting terraces and carefully considered solar orientations. At street level, the ground floors host complementary uses and shared amenities that foster safety, social interaction, and a strong sense of community.

Public space remains at the heart of the project: pedestrian pathways, lush green areas, and proximity to a future marina and transit hubs come together to shape a lifestyle defined by walkability and an enduring, effortless connection to both the local city and Lisbon.
